Mastering the Art of Diverse
Collaboration
By Arifur Rahman
When working with a range of different personalities from different cultures we can come across what is known as a ‘culture paradox’. This arises from individuals gaining different sources of stimulation, creativity and reward seeking from the group. This can lead to potential conflicts of values, behaviours and practices within the group. The culture paradox can also determine the similarity and diversity within different cultures which can either yield or hinder the success of collaboration.
Research on the culture paradox framework states we should not only address the friction different cultures can create within groups but also generate collaborative advantage through the friction. In managing cultural diversity there needs to be the accommodation of tensions for later reflections. This will lead towards a collaborative advantage. Therefore, managers should embrace the diversity of different opinions in the group to reach an effective outcome.
Tips on building a successful collaboration:
Determine what everyone's strengths are. Diversify them to work with different members of the group to form connections using their different strengths.
What good is there in working together if you’re not going to be honest with each other. Be prepared to be open and challenge some else's opinion. Creative differences and conflict can be very powerful and productive in reaching an effective outcome.
Create a simple structured process of communication within the group where everyone has a say. This can be during follow up group meetings where each member goes around the room saying what goals they would like the group to reach for the project.
Always praise each member of the group for all their efforts. This will encourage your leadership brand and help to establish a shared value among the differences of cultures within your group.
